Daniel Kluttz is the Senior Director of Sensitive Uses and Emerging Technologies at Microsoft’s Office of Responsible AI. He leads the program that engages with product engineering, research, and corporate strategy teams to consult, provide oversight, and deliver responsible AI policy guidance for Microsoft’s highest-impact and most sensitive AI technologies and strategic partnerships. Recognized for his leadership and impact, Daniel has built a program from its inception that today provides deep, multidisciplinary expertise on hundreds of AI-driven projects per year. He excels at understanding emerging technologies and their risk profiles, managing across boundaries, and working alongside engineers and policy experts alike to deliver risk mitigation frameworks that are implementable at scale.
Prior to joining Microsoft, Daniel was a researcher at UC Berkeley’s School of Information, where he helped manage and lead the Algorithmic Fairness & Opacity Working Group (AFOG), a multidisciplinary collaboration between researchers from academia and industry working on sociotechnical approaches to responsible AI. Also a former attorney, Daniel holds a PhD in sociology from UC Berkeley and a JD and bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
